Sorry is good enough

Enjoy.

‘Tom?’
‘Yes, Danny?’
‘Will you do me a favour?’
‘What kind of favour?’
Silence.
‘Tom?
‘Yes, Danny?’
‘Will you promise me something?’
‘What do you want me to promise you?’
Silence.
‘Will you never leave me? Please?’
Silence.
‘Of course I won’t, Danny. I thought you knew me better than that.’
‘You promise?
‘I promise.’
Silence.
‘Tom?’
‘Yes, Danny?’
‘I love you.’
‘I love you too, Dan.’
It was an ordinary Tuesday afternoon and we were sitting on a bench in the park. We were holding hands, while Danny had his head resting on my shoulder. I watched people going by. Some were with children, others alone. I couldn’t care about them. I was here with my Danny.
Everything seemed to be alright.
Well.
Seemed to be.
‘Tom?’
‘Yes, Danny?’
‘Why did you do it?’
Silence.
‘I don’t know.’
‘Oh.’
Silence.
‘Danny, you know I didn’t mean -’
‘I know, Tom. I just wanted to ask why you did it.’
Silence.
‘But you do regret it, don’t you?’
‘Of course I do! I’ve said that so many times, but you keep asking me. Yes, I regret it.’
‘Okay. That’s all I wanted to know.’
I stroked his hand and sighed. Danny was watching some boy and girl making out on the bench beside us, but didn’t say anything about them. I know he wanted to do the same with me, but I couldn’t find it in my heart to do that. Therefore I felt too guilty.
I wasn’t the victim. Danny was. I was wrong. Danny wasn’t.
I sighed again.
‘Danny?
‘Yes?’
‘I really regret it. I wish I didn’t do it, but it just happened.’
‘I know, Tom. You told me that before.’
‘Yes, but you need to know! I really didn’t want it to happen!’
Silence.
‘I know.’
‘You’re still mad at me, aren’t you?’
‘No, I’m not. If I was mad at you, I wouldn’t sit here, holding hands with you.’
Silence.
‘That’s true. You know I saw that girl yesterday?
‘What?’
‘I saw her.’
Silence.
‘Did you talk to her?’
‘Yes. I did.’
‘What did you say? What did she say? What happened?’
‘I told her that I made a big mistake. She said she wasn’t happy with it either. So we decided to forget it.’
Danny raised his head and looked at my face. He took his hand from mine and for a moment I was scared he was going to walk away. But he didn’t. He kissed my lips softly.
‘I’m glad you talked with her.’
‘Me too.’
‘Tom?’
‘Yes?’
‘I forgive you under one condition.’
Silence.
‘What condition?’
‘Don’t you ever kiss a girl again while I’m watching. Okay?’
Silence.
‘I will never do that again. I promise.’
Silence.
‘Tom? I love you so, so much.’
I smiled and kissed him.
‘I love you too, Danny.’
