Gedicht WO I

Unknown Soldier
I am the Unknown Soldier, lying tranquil in my grave
Underneath a bed of blooms my body is kept safe
The stone above my corpse tells you all about my life
Throughout the years of silent change my story will survive
Bravery, they say of me, was burning in my blood
In patriotic ecstasy, until my death I fought
They say the German soldiers saw the courage in my eyes
And the immortal gift of freedom was worth my sacrifice
No word about my deadly fears
No word about my bleeding ears
No word about the men I crushed
No word about my dying trust
No word about the boys that cried
No word about a suicide
No word about my pain
No word about the useless fight that drove us all insane
Here, in an Unknown Soldier’s grave, my broken bones are laid
Underneath a bed of blooms to compromise my fate
The Unknown Soldier’s story shall live on a thousand years
My story, long ago was drowned, in a lake of helpless tears
No cry of madness to be found
But poppies all around
