A letter to AI

Mijn klas heeft Johan Gerets (ja, de zoon van Erik, de voetbalcoach en voormalig voetballer) als vervanger voor Engels gehad, omdat onze lerares in de examencommissie zat voor kinderen die niet meer naar school gaan of voor buitenlandse kinderen. Eigenlijk was het wel grappig, want ik kende Johan al langer, mede omdat hij uit Rekem (Lanaken, Limburg, Vlaanderen, België) komt. Nou, hij gaf ons dus een opdracht om een brief naar Amnesty International te schrijven over het onderwerp 'The Death Penalty' (Doodstraf). Je mocht kiezen tussen twee standpunten, voor of tegen. Maar als je voor 'voor' koos, moest je zo schrijven dat je er echt voor bent. Dus geen neutrale meningen.
Op de dag dat we de brief moesten inleveren, vond hij het een goed idee om ons de brieven zelf te laten voorlezen. Mijn klas is normaal gesproken nooit echt stil (4e jaar wetenschappen - wiskunde -moderne talen), maar bij mijn brief was het verrassende stil en Gerets was er onder de indruk van en beloonde me met een maximum op spreken en schrijven.
Hieronder de brief:

Mr./ Mrs./ Miss.
I´m for the death penalty. My opinion is that people who did a bad crime (like murder) do not deserve to be in jail and either free. In jail they receive food and water. They have even protection against their enemies or to the revenge of the victim’s relatives. And that is all for free, for nothing! Why? Because they did a crime? But that’s not all… I heard they have a television in their cell, sometimes even a play station. They got the opportunity to study and to read books and we have to pay taxes to make sure they’ll have this all. I think they don’t deserve it!
Imagine! You’re walking together with your five-years-old child in the city. Everything is and was ok, till there suddenly appears a man. It’s a prisoner, but you don’t know that. And imagine he just repeats his crime exactly on your beloved child. I think you don’t want to set up your child’s funeral. In fact I know it for sure. You’ll surely think it won’t happen to you. So the devil may care? But think about it do you want to let it happen on someone else’s child.
And think about the family of the victim(s). They also have to pay taxes and they’ll have fear if the prisoner will be liberated!
An execution is less expensive than keeping somebody in prison. Just to indicate some prizes: an execution costs 500 euro (398 pounds) and to be in prison will cost the government (who lets us pay the taxes to finance the prisons) 5000 per years (125 000 euro lifelong).
I’m not saying the death penalty will scare all people with criminal intent, but hopefully they’ll think twice before acting.
I think the death penalty is the only good punishment for a murder, so an eye for an eye. Another reason I’ll quote is the fact that prisons will get to full and they’ll have build new ones. For the construction they’ll have to give up the needful nature and that’s a pity, that’s a shame!
I think if you don’t want to legalize the death penalty another good opportunity will be forced labour. So they have to work for earning their food and shelter. But I stay on my opinion and I hope you will not tear it to little pieces. I hope you read this and think about it.

Natuurlijk vind ik niet dat je zomaar de moordenaar moet omleggen als hij een moord heeft gepleegd. Er moet natuurlijk ook rekening gehouden worden met verzachtende omstandigheden, voldoende bewijs...
Maar ja, ik moest een duidelijk standpunt aannemen en ik wilde geen achilleshiel in mijn opstel.

Wat vinden jullie ervan?

Edit: er zit ergens nog een klein foutje in, maar ik vind hem niet meer:d

Ik vind het wel een mooi verhaaltje, heb er zelf ook wel een paar keer over gediscusiëerd. Ik weet niet zo goed of ik het er mee-eens ben, maar ik weet wel dat er toch wel veel "halve foutjes" in staan. Dingen die raar verwoord zijn ofzo. Ik kan er niet zo goed tegen als er foutjes in het Engels wordt gemaakt, dus sorry maar hier laat ik het maar bij : D Ik denk niet dat je zit te wachten op correcties.

Dat had Gerets al gedaan, maar er zaten er niet veel in, ik heb er een terug gevonden en de andere niet. Maar och ja, het gaat er om dat de boodschap overgebracht word
